Photography during travel is often at its purest form. Without thinking, I press and release the shutter based off the visual impulse. Aimless shooting leaves me feeling somewhat dazed, frigid like the air in Switzerland, like walking in a field of white snow. I am detached from what’s around me, the photos in the guesthouse are of people I don't recognize.

I feel foreign, even for myself.

The bell of the Hilterfingen church sounds every 15 minutes. I have an innate fear of the sound of church bells, so the 30 seconds before the ringing are my most nervous, most helpless, and most thoughtless moments; I stop in my tracks, like a deer in the headlights, waiting for the ringing to stop before I can calmly take the next step.

If death were to come every 15 minutes, then not once have I been prepared to face it.

After each bell ring, I am alive again for 14 minutes.
