Joshua Soenario (b. 2003) is an Australian-born visual artist based between London and Shanghai. They work across moving image, photography, writing and performative staging, while exploring the themes of identity, diaspora, postcolonialism, and psychoanalysis. They drawss on their lived experience of absence and trauma to reappear the juxtapostion of self-analysis and self-consumption.
Their process often begins with ruptures and fragments—diary writing, recorded dialogues, and research into genealogical and collective histories—before unfolding into image-making and constructed scenes. Recently, their practice has engaged more closely with Jungian psychoanalysis, drawing on the dynamics between the unconscious and the collective unconscious to think through how images, affects, and archetypal forms return and become vitalised over time. Moving between documentary encounters and speculative myth-making, Soenario builds non-linear narratives where trauma is approached as an ongoing trace, and identity remains unstable, unfinished, and continuously negotiated.
